I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but how do you unselect an event marker? The only way I can do this so far is by moving forward or backwards in the timeline but it takes a while to load.

Do you mean the red ones on the video timeline?

If you just click on the marker and not on the timeline it will also get selected.
